Pictured here, person dressed In festive colors, fabrics and grasses...an elaborate costume which represents our Ancestors or Egungun! As Indigenous People, our Spirituality (as well as Science!) tells us that our Ancestors are still among us guiding and protecting us. The same blood that was flowing through my Great Grandmother's veins is flowing through mine and so to is the essence, knowledge and wisdom she acquired! We honor our Ancestors, we invoke their guidance and protection...Oya is the guardian of the cemetery and so too rules the realm of the Ancestors. When I first created (channeled) what are now call "Batik Egungun Doll Earrings" , I did not even notice that they looked like dolls. All that I am aware of is that I had this idea burning in my heart, mind and spirit...I had many things to do that day but all I really wanted to do was to go to my studio (then in my Sistahfriend Crystals' Enchanted Creative Goddess Temple Home 💛) and get this vision out of me and into reality. When I got to my studio and put the piece together, I felt relieved. I had an event to go to that night and had finished the earrings in time to wear them. I put them on and they looked Amazing and I felt like 10 million bucks. Once I arrived at the film screening for Baltimore Girls ( A Supafly Safiyatou Production), people were floored by the beauty of my new pieces. They had been officially unofficially debuted! Safi came up to me and said "Jah-Afiya, those dolls are E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G! And so it was then that I realized that I had created some doll earrings...okay! |
